What's not to love about this oldie-but-a-goodie design? We've been referring to this piece as an example of effective holiday branding and creativity for a few years now.

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT

😳 TikTok facing a blanket ban in the US?

A woman looking at her mobile phone stressed out in an expressionist style by Stable Diffusion 2.1

In 2020, India set an "incredibly important precedent" by banning the world's most popular social media app, TikTok. Now, Brendan Carr, an FCC Commissioner, thinks that a similar move is needed in the US to "avert the continuing threat to our national security". 🙀

Recently, legislators have taken up the issue because of perceived risks that TikTok's data could be used to blackmail, spy on, and influence user sentiment against governments.

We mean, why would they think that?

It's not like we're totally mesmerized by the intellectual content and profound expression demonstrated in 15-second lip syncs, overly complicated dance routines, or people making cereal with their feet for kicks.

On a serious note, this is serious

As professionals in the field who have clients that may be all-in on TikTok, this is huge. You should have a contingency plan in place if you don't already.

Meanwhile, Meta's tweaking algorithms and Google's working on their dance moves because of the prospect of TikTok's ban. We're not sure how they'll step into TikTok's big shoes if a ban goes into effect, but we should all be prepared.

RANDOM OBSERVATIONS

🔮 Our biggest predictions for 2023

A genie with a genie lamp at a table in the style of Sendak by Stable Diffusion 2.1

  1. Will my job be replaced by AI? Probably not. AI will be ubiquitous in 2023 but as a power tool for professionals to take advantage of.

  2. Will TikTok be banned in the US? It's hard to imagine given the crazy number of DAU in the US. It's a real possibility though, so hedge your plans.

  3. Will Twitter go bust? Nope.

  4. Will we beat Goldfish? On attention you mean? No way! In fact, we'll have to do a lot better to improve our messaging across all channels because 3 seconds is the new 8.

  5. Will the metaverse go main stream? Probably not this year, but we're going to see some cool implementations in the enterprise space.

  6. Who's going to win the Super Bowl? It's a toss up, but we'd love to see the Bills play the 49ers.

  7. Will Web3 finally take off? We think cryptocurrencies will become regulated in the US and Europe. As far as their underlying technology—blockchain goes, we see a huge year ahead. NFTs will adapt and become practical in their implementation, especially in the entertainment/sports worlds.

  8. Will I have to change up my messaging model for content? We agree with our friends at Marketing Brew that McDonald's is a good benchmark for your client's digital voice.

  9. What kind of content will be queen in 2023? Video shorts and story-telling.

  10. What programming technologies should I focus on? That depends on what you're building. Git and Docker/Kubernetes are becoming essential if you're working for large businesses. Rust, Python, and Typescript are the most loved/wanted technologies. Phoenix takes the top spot for web frameworks. People learning to code are jumping in to 3D tools like Unity and Unreal Engine.

  11. What jobs will be most in-demand for self-employed professionals in the freelance space? We see an increase in demand for social media managers, copywriters, video editors, graphic designers, and software development professionals.

Write us back and tell us your predictions for the new year.

This section is inspired by Alex Lieberman of Morning Brew. We participated in a Newsletter XP course he co-hosted with Tyler Denk and our friends at Beehiiv in December. "Love it!" became a simple litmus test for a good idea, comment, or share. So, we're running with it because we love it.
